Middle School Youth Group - Defining "Neighbor"

Luke 10:25-37 (The Message)

Defining "Neighbor" 25 Just then a religion scholar stood up with a question to test Jesus. "Teacher, what do I need to do to get eternal life?"

26He answered, "What's written in God's Law? How do you interpret it?"
27He said, "That you love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence—and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself."

28"Good answer!" said Jesus. "Do it and you'll live."

29Looking for a loophole, he asked, "And just how would you define 'neighbor'?"

30-32Jesus answered by telling a story. "There was once a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way he was attacked by robbers. They took his clothes, beat him up, and went off leaving him half-dead. Luckily, a priest was on his way down the same road, but when he saw him he angled across to the other side. Then a Levite religious man showed up; he also avoided the injured man.

33-35"A Samaritan traveling the road came on him. When he saw the man's condition, his heart went out to him. He gave him first aid, disinfecting and bandaging his wounds. Then he lifted him onto his donkey, led him to an inn, and made him comfortable. In the morning he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take good care of him. If it costs any more, put it on my bill—I'll pay you on my way back.'
36"What do you think? Which of the three became a neighbor to the man attacked by robbers?"

37"The one who treated him kindly," the religion scholar responded.
Jesus said, "Go and do the same."

"Random Acts of Kindness" Group instructions

Below are the instructions that the sr. high small groups were given. This should help explain a bit of what when on last night and help you understand the pictures in prior postings.

You and your small group are to use downtown Greensboro as your area to spread kindness! When Jesus was present on earth, much of his teachings were in the form of action rather than just words. In addition, Jesus was creative in his teachings. So be creative!

Inside your bag are items you are to use to spread kindness. You must check off everything listed.

1. You are to give away 3 bottles of water any way you’d like. However, I don’t suggest you throw it at someone’s head and say, “Here’s some water!”

2. You are to use 6 pieces of paper and the markers to come up with some creative way to spread kindness. Please don’t give away the markers!!

3. You must use $3.00 in some creative fashion as a means to give to others.

4. Find 3 items on the ground that should have been thrown in the recycling bin and…well…throw it in the recycling bin.

5. Finally, look around you and decide as a group 2 acts of kindness you will do that is not listed above.

Middle School Youth Group!

Last night the middle school participated in a mouse trip gauntlet blindfolded and barefooted! Of course they had a partner leading them from the other side, but it wasn't easy! The focus of the activity was ANXIETY in our daily lives. How do we deal with it and use one another for support. How do we use our faith to help?

Matthew 14:22-33
During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
"Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
