Global Village - Middle School #4

As the working day grew to an end, dinner drew near. It was a VERY SPECIAL dinner. Many of the poorest of the poor must find their food any way that they can, even if it means scrounging for leftover food. Saturday's dinner was given to us from the fine Calvin Center cafeteria. So nice of them! However, all the leftover, uneaten food was thrown together into a garbage bag! So our dinner consisted of a mix of Fruit Loops, breaded fish, tortilla chips, brownies, potato salad, and other special juices (yuck, sorry for using that word) that we couldn't quite determine. It truly gave us a reality check! Too bad these pictures aren't scratch and sniff.

After a hard morning's work, lunch was a luxury! Lunch consisted of a stir fry of rice, veggies and chicken. Of course we still had some cornmeal flat bread to finish from breakfast. This was the first regular meal since eating a fast food lunch on the way to Calvin Center Friday afternoon.

After lunch was the typical routine - heat up water with hot coals to wash the dishes and make sure we have enough water. The only place to get water for the village was to travel about a quarter of a mile down to the horse pasture where the water pump was located. Walking down is easy, but walking back with a jug full of water is another story!

Helloooo morning! A little different look than the night before, huh? Notice the elegant bathroom behind the girls. Our first night was quite the cold one that most of us didn't expect. Nonetheless, the day must go on starting with cornmeal bread for breakfast before getting to work.

After breakfast the group got down to work. The girls worked in the field preparing the ground and planting seeds while the boys made bricks (below). The amount of work they did during this day depending on how much money (Goud - the Haitian currency) they received for the market.

Global Village - Middle School #1

This past weekend Tommy, Spencer, Travis, Ciara, Elisabeth, Kylie, Scott and Lindsey ventured to the Calvin Center and took part in the Global Village (GV). We pretty much lived like Haitians without actually going to Haiti. We lived like the poorest of the poor, struggled with our emotions with little food, worked for money to buy food at the market, slept in a brick building, ate dinner from a trash bag and enjoyed some fried insects for a special treat. All-in-all, this group laughed, played, struggled, questioned, became frustrated with one another, and became a super close group by the end. It's amazing how eating fried insects can bring a group closer!! Enjoy the photos!

This picture was taken on the first night. Although we had just eaten dinner of less than a handful of beans and rice, notice the smiles, the clean clothes and energy!
